While studying abroad in Budapest, Hungary, I became interested in the way Jewish spaces were often poorly preserved and presented. With rising nationalism and antisemitism in Hungary, I wondered if there was a connection between dilapidated Jewish spaces and hatred towards Jews. Space and Rights examines this question, and asks whether or not the spaces that represent a group affect the way the group is perceived and its members are treated.
I gained access to the Rumbach Street Synagogue, and all of the photographs for this project were made in that space.
